It doesn't take much snow for Athenians to head to Parnassos Ski Center, the largest cosmopolitan snow-capped resort in Greece, for a weekend of skiing and fun! Located on Mount Parnassos, approximately 180 km (120 miles) and 2.5 hours from Athens, it is near the historical town of Delphi and the very (as of late) posh mountain village of Arachova. The ski center, situated at an altitude of 1,600 to 2,300 metres (5,300 to 7,500 feet), is divided into two separate ski areas -- Fterolaka and Kellaria -- that feature 13 ski lifts and 23 ski runs totalling 14km (9 miles). Additional services and facilities also include a parking lot, a heliport, reception areas, a cafeteria, a bar, a restaurant, first aid station, road assistance and a baby-sitting service. There are also ski and snowboarding schools, rental facilities and shops where you can buy equipment and clothing. Cosy and romantic bed and breakfast-type lodgings, with a traditional Greek village motif, can be found in Arachova, the winter resort destination for Athenians who enjoy the charming town's vibrant nightlife and haute cuisine. Quieter, but just as popular, are the villages along the northern part of the mountain, such as Fthiotida.
