THE STREET FOOD

Never too late, never too early: Hot-dog time!

A night out in Athens – laid out in alphabetical order – may include:
After-hours parties
Basil daiquiris
Beats
Dancing
Flirting
Masticha liqueur shots
Partying

But it definitely includes the night’s final, irreplaceable order: sausage and sauerkraut; or souvlaki; or anything else that’s served at the small-hour street food canteens, the perfect pick-me-up after our fabulously exhausting nights out.

We call it “vromiko” which is Greek for “dirty,” but it’s clearly what we long for after a few drinks, to clear away the fuzziness and appease the appetite: a full-carb, full-taste bite of heaven.

As you drive around the sleeping city, you’ll spot it right away. A spotlight falls over a swarm of people gathering around a tiny canteen, a food truck with a vintage touch and tempting aromas wafting from its “open kitchen.”

The menu is written in old-style lettering above the window where the chefs put on their show.  With a magician’s sleight of hand, they juggle all their tasty ingredients, working up to their “ultimate trick” – they split apart the steaming bun, they stuff it with pickled cabbage, they toss in the boiling sausage, lather on some mustard and ketchup… and abracadabra! A steaming hot treat lands in your hands ready for you to work a little magic of your own by making it vanish in 2 minutes flat!

Like Formula 1 drivers, we race around Athens, we run, we roll, we walk, we fall, and always end up at our “pit stop.” These reflex-action “repair shops” with the purring sound of the generator and the sodas displayed in their sparkling colors, are there to slap the body back to life, each time tempting you: One more for the road?
