THE UNDERGROUND

The indie side of Athenian entertainment

You’ll skip through the city’s bright side and discover a whole world of museums, sights and statues. Yet, there’ll be a nagging question: what’s on the dark side?

There’s another realm of basement studios, urban gardens, secret bars and blue-light clubs; you’ll unearth an underground culture burgeoning to the holler of punky angst and raw, thumping garage basslines.

The Athenian underground scene follows the structure of a song; listen to it to hear the city’s alternative voice. The intro is melodic and deep, echoing the sounds escaping amateur recording studios in Votanikos neighborhood.

The verse is divergent: an emerging band’s release party; a coded call to all outliers to dig out the next, big, indie band; a maze of bars hosting gigs and DJ sets off Syntagma Square; a sad, monolithic melody played on a synthesizer, just the thing for shoegazers in a terrace sunset bar; the Balkan rhythm and its ragtime “cousins” coaxing swingers onto the dance floor in parqueted parlors in the old heart of 1940s Athens.

Over and over again, the chorus echoes “The real ones.” Whether sung in  Greek or English, the songs, their  beat, rhythm, instruments and lyrics, all uphold the spirit  of the underground, always questioning   the status quo and  creating another alternative: The crowd blends into one with them cheering, singing, dancing  ̶  fists raised high into the night!

Lurking in the dark, they are the city’s hidden gems, a new, emerging culture. Discover their underground charm and sing along…
