THE EARLY BIRDS

Back to how it was: from dusk till dawn.

Dawn in Athens, what a blissful occasion! In the scenic alleys at the foot of Mount Lycabettus, shutters creak open and birds chirp merrily, unaware of their forest-free reality. The streets are empty. An elderly couple is sitting on the balcony sipping their morning coffee when… their perfect silence is broken by loud hearty laughter!

Four bare feet, high heels in hand; two best friends, arm in arm, walk and rattle on excitedly about the hours that have just passed. Their chatter takes us back through their eventful night and reminds us of the pleasures and mystique in store in the city that stays awake to spoil us!

First thing’s last: they hit the local after-joint, a street canteen where night creatures meet to chew over the party razzmatazz. No words: just two fat buns, double sausage, and pickled coleslaw mayo, the fullest full stop to an awesome night.

A little earlier, we find them in full-on party mode, bar crawling around Gazi, dancing to the latest pop hits, giving lungs and vocal chords a thorough work-out!. The bars are packed but they don't care, they have each other, they own the night!

Flash-further-back ̶ they’re hanging out at the "Bermuda Triangle" of Syntagma-Omonoia-Monastiraki area, lost in a labyrinth of funky bars, DJ parties, and secret jazz gigs.

Which brings us to the start  ̶  they enjoy a fancy cocktail in a terrace overlooking Syntagma Square. They confide, they home in on old classmates the smart phone way and, just like that, they prove that "old friendships never die."

Night in and night out, they will lose track of time once more, until their paths meet in a spot downtown, for another glorious Athenian night that will end with the dawn, walking barefoot by Lycabettus!
