SUMMER IN THE CITY: NATIONAL GARDEN PHOTO COMPETITION

By THIS IS ATHENS TEAM at 26.Jun

From sunrise to sunset, the National Garden grants a shady reprieve – and sometimes a little romance - to Athenians and visitors alike.

This summer, the city oasis also plays the muse.

Capture your best image of the National Garden in its summer finery (before August 30) and you could be in the running to win fantastic photographic equipment, and see your work displayed in the capital. The open call is part of the “National Garden in Four Seasons" competition, run by the City of Athens and Photography magazine.

Infinite photo opportunities exist within the city’s central park. Perhaps, you’ll find inspiration in the soaring palm trees planted by King Otto’s wife, Queen Amalia, or in the famous sundial. Maybe it will be the Chinese trees-of-heaven that will lure your lens; or the Judas trees with their bright perennial blooms.  There are the rowdy ducks who populate the lakes, the marble busts of Greek national heroes, ancient mosaics and other fascinating fragments from history.  And of course, there are always people — playing, picnicking, or practicing yoga. (If you are photographing people, please obtain their consent first).

Photography magazine is looking for landscape shots, but also spontaneous submissions that capture the singular lighting of an Athenian summer or portray the rich daily life of the National Garden.

The 18 winning images from the Spring competition are currently on display on the perimeter fence of the National Garden on Vasilissis Sofias Avenue.

Submissions for the "Autumn" and "Winter" National Garden photography competitions will be accepted until 30 November and 31 January 2019, respectively.
